Evgeny Mravinsky, Leningrad Philharmonic
Tchaikovsky – Symphony No 6 “Pathétique”
01. ADAGIO – ALLEGRO NON TROPPO
02. ALLGRO CON GRAZIA
03. ALLGRO MOLTO VIVACE
Evgeny Mravinsky leads the Leningrad Philharmonic in the famous recording of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 from 1960.
There have been many recordings of the last 3 Tchaikovsky Symphonies, but Mravinsky’s readings with the Leningrad Philharmonic from 1960 stand alone as legends of the gramophone. There is something of the steely intensity of the orchestra and conductor, and the still unique sound of the woodwinds which hearkens back to an earlier era of Russian orchestras, and overall provides almost a living link to the composer’s vision.
